319 JPs in C18 Middlesex and Alehouse licences: A letter from Mrs Elizabeth Merrick complaining about difficulty in getting an alehouse licence; and reply from Richard Bulstrode, a Middle MP (who admits to having several alehouses himself); 1749. The letter from Mrs Merrick is addressed to Whitlock Bulstrode, mistakenly; Whitelocke Bulstrode (1652-1724) had been a Middlesex MP since 1709, was chairman of the Quarter Sessions more than once, but was long since deceased. His only son, Richard, had succeeded his father in the manor of Hounslow and had also become a Middlesex MP. Hicks Hall, which he mentions, was the then sessions house for Middlesex, in St John Street, Clerkenwell. (There is an entry for Whitelocke Bulstrode in the Oxford DNB; and the family connection with the manor of Hounslow is covered in VCH Middx III, 1962, pp107, 135). 'Mr E Smith Member for Lincolnshire' is presumably Edward Smith MP for Leicestershire 1734-62, d.1762 on whom see R Sedgwick, House of Commons 1715-54, 1970, II, p427. Also another letter to Richard Bulstrode with his reply added to it, 1743). (3) £100-£120.
