London: John Van Voorst, 1849. 8vo, contemporary full embossed dark green morocco, spine lettered and decorated between five raised bands, covers giltstamped with elaborate borders and urn at centre, a.e.g., gilt dentelles. vii, 250pp. Four tinted lithographic plates printed by Hullmandel & Walton after sketches by the author. Errata slip tipped in at pp. vi/vii. Bookseller's label on front pastedown. Spine and edges rubbed; front free endpaper excised. First Edition; later editions appeared in 1850 and 1855. Fine tales of wandering the countryside to study the ways of the local bird population, with ample scientific data in the catalogue. Knox (1808-1896) published two later books on birds and sport. Including 12pp autograph transcript by Seymour describing his early connection with Albert, the Prince Consort during his tour of Italy 1838 "The Prince was at this time little more than 19 years old...he had a look of great distinction..." Description of daily routines his social life and travel throughout Italy including ascent of Vesuvius and meeting with Pope Gregory - Seymour concludes with description of Albert's arrival in England prior to his marriage to Victoria. Details of Seymour's services particularly in the Crimean War. Four commission - one signed by William IV, one by Victoria. Some photos. Papers dealing with his royal activities. 340 CHURCHILL ARCHIVE: A unique archive of over 750 xerox copies forming the majority of the 'C' section (Churchill's contributions to press and periodicals) from Frederick Wood's bibliography of the works of Churchill. Commencing with the announcement of his birth in The Times to his death. Including his Boer War Telegrams and his despatches to The Morning Post, Daily Telegraph etc. The copies were made by the British Library and are a mixture of broadsheet and tabloid in size, each is pencil marked with the relevant number from Woods' bibliography. Some edge fraying to a few sheets but overall in sound condition. £80-£120.
