125 HOME FRONT WWII: A poignant collection of 119 love letters written almost daily between 17 July 1940- 1 January 1941 from RAF 1325119 A/C Victor Jonas to his sweetheart Joan Lewey. Victor had just been conscripted into the RAF and had just arrived at his first posting in Blackpool. He was billeted with seven others in Miss Todd's boarding house which was still taking in paying holiday guests. He was to be trained as a wireless operator during a 12-15 week course which included morse and radio communications. Joan was employed in the accounts department of the Daily Telegraph in Fleet Street and lived at 21 Ashbourne Avenue, Golders Green, London. Their initial relationship seems to have been a secret from their respective families and his letters were addressed to Joan at her place of work. Despite the distance Joan visits Victor in Blackpool and stays for a weekend in the boarding house. Later a further visit is made where they both stay in the Station Hotel in Stafford (separate rooms!). Meanwhile the air raids over London intensify and cause Joan and her mother to move to Southampton living outside the tow at Rosemont, Ashdown Road, Fawley, Hants. Having completed his initial course Victor is also moved south to the RAF station at Compton Bassett, Wilts where he continues his training in the morse code. Now being nearer, the lovers often manage to meet up at the weekends, sometimes in Trowbridge or Salisbury. The port of Southampton becomes a target for the increasing bombing raids and at one stage Joan and her mother are forced to do their cooking over an open fire as the gas supply ceases for some weeks. Rumours abound at the camp in Calne and Victor believes that as soon as he reaches 18 words per minute in morse he will possibly be posted abroad. In view of this possibility they decide to get married and on Jan 1st 1941 the daily correspondence ceases. A small group of later letters dated 1943 are addressed to Mrs V Jonas showing that they did indeed get married and that Joan had moved back to London at 90 Kyverdale Road, Stamford Hill and Victor was now stationed at SHQ Signals RAF Silverstone near Towcester Northants and then soon moved to RAF Upwood,. Romsey, Hants, where he arranged for his wife to join him in rented accommodation with Mrs Skinner at Wytehall, Princes Street in Romsey. (Quantity) £100-£120.
