The largest being a massive long folio layout with 220 photos (various sizes) of Smith-Dorrian in India C1890s with some English photos including some from balloons. Mainly military life with plenty of horse related events and 6 watercolours paintings of horses by Indian (?) artist 'Mummoo'. Another album 50 or so mainly portraits and a loose collection of later photos including items relating to F M Sir William Robertson. Smith-Dorrian is chiefly remembered as one of six officers who survived the massacre at Issandawana in 1879. He went on to lead the 2nd Army in the Great War but was sacked by French. | 138 | US WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, DEATH IN BOSTON HARBOUR: Commission appointing Robert Menzies ensign in 19th Regiment 1757. Fine signature of George II pfms - seal worn off. Menzies rose to become Major in 84th Foot and was put in charge of a Battalion of new recruits shipped to Boston to take part in the War of Independence. Unbeknown to them Boston had by then in 1776 fallen to the rebels. Their ship was attacked and dismasted by American Privateers. Menzies was amongst these killed in action. £120-£150. | Nil |
