The work projected and compiled by W Eden Hooper, THE HISTORY OF THE STAGE DURING THE VICTORIAN ERA written by Joseph Knight. London: Spottiswoode & Co Ltd, 1901 No.56 of limited edition of 300 copies. 4to. Red morocco gilt, fine apart from missing gilt buckle clasp. A superb record of the leading players of the Victorian stage, comprising fine - and often little-known - portraits, and very useful contemporary biographies containing information which would be difficult to gather. A work of this size and magnificence could easily have been meretricious, but this is a handsome and information souvenir, covering the careers of the well-known actors such as Irving, Ellen Terry Tree, Martin Harvey, Charles Warner, as well as many Gilbert and/or Sullivan actors/singers, and music hall or pantomime stars such as Ada Reeve and Harry Nicholls. The authors include, for example, a fine portrait of W S Gilbert in older age, Anthony Hope, Cecil Raleigh, G R Sims. £150-£200. | Nil |
