CARICATURE ALBUM: 'Political Donkeys': album c.1840, 12pp with watercolours and a few other pencil drawings: a series of political caricatures mostly featuring donkeys, a familiar epithet to one's rivals in local elections. The initial drawing shows 'Laudatur Ab His', with pencil inscription 'Pinney addressing his friends': this may be Charles Pinney, a Bristol merchant and local politician who owned sugar plantations and slaves in the West Indies: contemporary red half-calf over marbled boards, sometime recased, rubbed and scuffed, initial 5 leaves loose, oblong 8vo.
