NASSAU BALLOON, CONTEMPORARY EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT: four side ALS from James Hind, Millwright of Manchester, Oct 31st 1837, describing a journey to London travelling with a Mr Whitworth, presumably inventor and manufacturer Sir James Whitworth... 'the principal person concerned in making & performing the experiments with the parachutes.' Discussion of steam engines and waterwheels, adding that 'business not very brisk here' . He ends with a PS: 'Nov 4th..I have just seen the Nassau balloon ascend with ten people...it was one of the most splendid sights I ever saw...' Charles Green's famous balloon was one of the wonders of the day. Three days later Green left London before landing in Weisburg Germany 18 hours later, a record journey of 480 miles: bifolium, old folds and toning, generally in good condition. (1)
